TOPIC 2: Addressing the protection of human rights defenders from state repression.
The Human Rights Council aims for the protection of human rights defenders from state repression and suppression. From brutality and violence by military forces, harassment, and unauthorized legal repression by state actors, there are various concerns related to state suppression. It also confronts the impunity for violations against defenders, targeted surveillance, and barriers to their access to resources and basic needs, and restrictive laws combined with public order regulations used to suppress opposition against governments globally. Members in this forum seek to highlight the importance of eradicating this issue through the use of heavy governmental monitoring of abuses against defenders by creating reliable report systems that aim to prosecute offenders of law. Through the enactment of international laws that safeguard the rights of human rights defenders, ensuring protections against harassment, intimidation, and violence, accountability of international governments is strengthened as a result.
